Summary

The COVID-19 pandemic isn't over。 But even as governments around the world try to get it under control, they're also starting to talk about what happens next。 How can we prevent another pandemic from killing millions of people and devastating the global economy? Can we even hope to accomplish this?

Bill Gates believes the answer is yes, and he has written a largely upbeat book that lays out clearly and convincingly what the world should learn from COVID-19, explains the science of fighting pandemics, and suggests what all of us can do to help prevent another one。

Please shoot me if I ever want to take pandemic advice from a guy who lobbied as hard as Gates did to keep Covid-19 vaccines out of the developing world。

Love the cover!

Does he mean prevention as in containment or prevention as in not happening in the first place? If the latter, that assertion is plainly misleading and a little bit of clickbaity wishful thinking。Not sure why this is presented as such。 Clearly, the topic is worth discussing without any additional spin。 How to Mitigate the Next Pandemic? Now that is something that sounds like a good read。

Great book

This is not a review or a rating (yet), since the book isn't coming out for a few months and I don't have an advance copy。 This is rather my observations on what I hope to find Mr。 Gates addressing in his book, namely the psychological factors that contribute to pandemics and make them unnecessarily persistent and destructive, even after we have the medical tools to end them。As I write this in early 2022, highly safe and effective vaccines against COVID-19 have been abundant in the developed cou This is not a review or a rating (yet), since the book isn't coming out for a few months and I don't have an advance copy。 This is rather my observations on what I hope to find Mr。 Gates addressing in his book, namely the psychological factors that contribute to pandemics and make them unnecessarily persistent and destructive, even after we have the medical tools to end them。As I write this in early 2022, highly safe and effective vaccines against COVID-19 have been abundant in the developed countries for months, available at no cost to the recipient。 In the USA where I live, for example, the supply of vaccines caught up to demand in April, 2021。 Before then, getting a vaccine appointment was often difficult for individuals who weren't prioritized, and afterward it became generally easy for everyone eligible。 And now scientists have extensive data on vaccine effectiveness。 As the most recent data for the USA (through December 2021 and January 2022) show, getting vaccinated and boosted cuts an individual's chances of death from COVID-19 by a whopping 97 times。 Given that over 900,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 in roughly two years, this means the vaccines are able to reduce COVID-19's lethality to be comparable to the annual flu, which kills around 10,000 Americans in an average year。And yet over 2000 Americans are dying every day from COVID-19, with the vast majority of them unvaccinated and unboosted。 Given that almost everyone above the age of 5 is eligible for free vaccination, and only a very tiny percentage have a legitimate medical reason to avoid getting vaccinated, most COVID-19 deaths in the USA are now both avoidable and deliberate。 What's killing Americans now isn't just the virus itself, but the virus combined with the enabling factor of science denial。 That is, tens of millions of Americans are susceptible to disinformation, due to either poor critical thinking skills or the determination not to use them。 These cognitive deficiencies are unnecessarily prolonging the pandemic, causing massive suffering。In addition to anti-vaxxers we have many millions of anti-maskers, and the two groups overlap。 Face coverings are also highly effective at preventing the spread of respiratory infections, when everyone in a group setting wears masks properly。 As with anti-vax beliefs, anti-mask beliefs are typically driven by science denial and poor critical thinking skills。Therefore I will be interested to read how Mr。 Gates plans to prevent the pandemic of science denial, or nullify its effects。 How do we inoculate the population against the deadly disinformation that's killing thousands of Americans every week? It doesn't matter how good the tools are if people stupidly refuse to take advantage of them。 。。。more

I believe that COVID-19 can be the last pandemic。 In my upcoming book, I lay out the specific steps we can take to not only stop future pandemics but provide better health care for everyone around the world。
